An External Review of Governance (ERG) considers how well a school’s governing board is working in terms of its effectiveness, impact, processes and structures, leadership and challenges. An external system leader or governance consultant works with the board, including the Headteacher, the Chair and the Clerk, to identify areas to improve its performance – it is in effect a governance audit or health check supported by action planning. Reviewers often act as a mentor for chairs during and after the ERG and offer support and guidance as appropriate. ERG is sometimes commissioned by the Diocese for faith schools and are again led by experienced governance professional including, but not exclusively, NLGs.
Governing Boards can choose to have an ERG at any time although they are often as requirement of an Ofsted inspection.
