Simon Cowley

I am Primary Director of The White Horse Federation, Multi-Academy Trust. My key areas of responsibility within the Trust include school improvement, leadership development and challenge to senior leaders in the MAT as well as providing curriculum and assessment support. I work with the Swindon Teaching School which is a cohort one teaching school. The teaching school provides effective CPD and school to school support, as well as successful initial teacher training programmes through the SCITT.

I have had the opportunity to teach and lead schools internationally as well as in England. I am a National Leader of Education and within this role I have successfully supported schools and MATs in the region

Dr. Jenny Blunden

I am Chief Executive of Truro and Penwith Academy Trust, a cross-phase academy trust working with sponsored and converter academies in Cornwall. My professional background is in Post-16 quality improvement, initial teacher training and higher education with a particular interest in developing teacher research activities.
I am currently vice-chair of governors for a small, rural primary school.

Regional Activity

Regional Conferences and Events
Regional events are held in order to bring together all system leaders to develop the emerging school-led system.

Initial Teacher Training
We have supported Teaching School ITT providers to enable practice sharing and strategic funding opportunities to meet region’s needs.

Special TSA Network
The region’s eight SpecialTSAs meet to plan ways to meet support for SEND across the region.

Targeted Support Fund
The region has a system leader and step up leader programme to develop future SLE through facilitated sessions, coaching and brokered support to schools, as well as providing back-fill and an introduction to middle leadership.

Teaching Schools Council

The Teaching Schools Council (TSC) is a national body representing all Teaching Schools in England.

The Council is made up of 20 elected members, with either a national or regional remit, who direct and shape the work of teaching Schools through discussion with government ministers and senior officials.

The Teaching Schools Council exists to provide:
• A regulator role
• A facilitator role
• An advisor role

TSC representatives are serving school leaders of designated Teaching Schools, elected by Teaching Schools in their region or co-opted to provide national
specialist advice.

Ambition and Vision

In the SouthWest Region our vision is that every child attends a great school and that great schooling is an entitlement for all. To achieve this we are committed to working collaboratively with all stakeholders and partners so that:

A self-improving system becomes a reality where schools receive timely and relevant support provided by proven excellent school leaders, teachers and education professionals.

Teaching Schools work together to play a key system leader role, providing and coordinating outstanding, evidence-informed CPLD and school-to-school support enabling sustainable system-led continuous improvement.

Through Teaching School Alliances and effective partnership working, more schools develop the skills, knowledge and capacity to become“givers of support” in order to drive system-led continuous improvement

Regional Infrastructure

To achieve the SouthWest ambition and vision, TSC Representatives Tony Bloxham and Jim Rogers have put the following infrastructure in place:

Sub-Regional Leads
The region has appointed four Sub-Regional Leads to coordinate collaborative Teaching School activity in their area.

Regional Coordination
A Regional Coordinator provides support for the work of the TSC Representatives and Sub-Regional Leads.

Regional Activity

National Leaders of Governance
The region has established sub-regional NLG advocates for brokerage and support. Local Leader ofGovernance roles are being developed to build further capacity.

Women Leading in Education
A national contract to encourage more women to pursue a career in leadership in education through network events, inspirational speakers and guidance.

Coaching Pledge
A pledge to increase the number of women in leadership positions by raising the profile and encouraging region-wide engagement with the National Coaching Pledge.

Peer Review
The region has introduced a peer review process through Train the Trainer sessions in order to enable TSA to evaluate their work across the Big 3.
