The grant has enabled us to bring together Maths leads and Maths SLEs in our alliance to work together and support each other to develop both pedagogy and subject knowledge in the area of Maths for the new PC. We began with a group, calling themselves the ‘ Maths Chapter’ who had a specific remit of driving pedagogical change and improving teacher knowledge in Maths. This group is a networked learning community and has members linked into both Singapore Maths and Shanghai methods using NCETM and the NWHub. The intention is to adopt and adapt such strategies but fundamentally change the way Maths is taught in schools both across the alliance and now more widely with the creation of Maths Chapter 2; building and expanding on our current work. A pilot project across the alliance in 2 year groups in each school is being launched. This will show the impact of the work on pupil outcomes.

Resources:

  • Powerpoint presentations to be used to present to staff. E.g. Teaching with Variation, Problem Solving and Reasoning, The ‘How’ and ‘Why’ of Maths.
  • Workshop resource used to present at our conference “Making Learning Irresistible’ November 2014.
  • Photographs demonstrate use of reasoning and problem solving strategies, questioning and methods including graffiti Maths.
  • Calculation policies.
  • Staff meeting introducing the Bar Method.
