The funding was used for three key areas of work; Curriculum Planning, ICT, Training and the development of Level Descriptors for Years 1-6 for Maths and English. Lionel Walden worked with all schools in the March and Chatteris Clusters.

1. New National Curriculum Planning

An inspirational consultant provided participants with a supported and reflective day which began by looking at the big picture, underlying rationale and values, the relationship between a School Curriculum and the National Curriculum, and pupil entitlement before focussing on tools that can support the different schools as they begin/continue to map out the New National Curriculum within their own School Curriculum.

2. ICT Training

As Heads identified ICT as an area of particular concern, a bespoke series of ‘New ICT Curriculum’ twilight training sessions were organised for the schools to attend. These included Awareness Raising, Focus on Programming, E-safety, Digital Literacy and Development Planning.

3. Level descriptors (Year 1-6) for Maths and English

Two working groups were formed from subject coordinators, one for Maths and one for English. Each group had expertise from KS1 and KS2 and colleagues from the local secondary schools. Starting with a consultant led initial meeting, each group developed new assessment level descriptors that ‘fit’ with the new primary numeracy and literacy curricula and make sense as a progression across Key Stages 1 and 2. The creation of multi-school groups meant that expertise was shared and a system was created that will enable cross-cluster moderation in the future. These initial ‘pilot’ documents were ready for implementation in September 2014. Some changes have already been made, but they will be more fully reviewed and updated at the end of this academic year.
