What happens when phonics doesn’t work?
- There are a range of ‘catch up’ programmes available to ensure that pupils, particularly those in EYFS and KS1, reach age related expectations based on the New National Curriculum, in terms of decoding and spelling. Missing this target can result in pupils being unable to move onto the higher order skills such as reading for meaning and using and applying their skill set across the curriculum.
- This resource provides some links to commercially produced core phonics programmes which can be either delivered as an intervention or adapted to meet the needs of specific groups of pupils.
- There is also guidance on teaching techniques that can be used to deliver programmes or augment the phonic scheme already used within the school.
